On-Program Learning (OPL) Key Features

The On-Program Learning (OPL) process tracks apprentices through their learning. OPL brings together many elements including work experience, classroom learning, and various types of evaluations. Within SkilSure apprentices automatically accumulate a body of work demonstrating their learning and competence. Examples of this work are used to create a summative portfolio which they can export and submit at Gateway.

End Point Assessments (EPA) Key Features

One thing all End Point Assessments (EPAs) have in common is that they’re reviewed by an End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO). The EPAO is a separate organisation from the apprentice’s Training Provider. To be compliant SkilSure has a firewall between OPL and EPA. The apprentice indicates at Gateway their readiness for review, that readiness is assessed by the EPAO at Gateway and the EPA begins.

An apprenticeship standard

An apprenticeship standard is one of the apprenticeship qualifications developed by organisations in tandem with employers.

A regulated qualification

A regulated qualification is a qualification created by an awarding body containing units and criteria. You should have a handbook and unit specification that outlines the criteria required for the qualification, which can be part of a framework, NVQ, RQF, BTEC or another certificated qualification.

A bespoke qualification

A bespoke qualification is one created by an employer or a training centre. It can be part of a regulated qualification or one you’ve created in its entirety.

Overall Benefits

  • Initial Planning feature can be used to plan the apprentice learning to reflect the results of the assessment done at the beginning of the apprenticeship.
  • Tracks the off-the-job training so the employer can see if/when they need to facilitate more time for their apprentices.
  • Provides a clear view of the process at all times including viewing the apprentice progress towards the completion of their Initial Plan. This enables quick and informed decision making on the managers part to improve the apprentice’ learning when necessary.
  • The Admin account has specific functionality over the entire process and enables the admin to manage the whole apprenticeship process.

Initial Assessment

Can be uploaded into SkilSure to support the learner specific configuration of the OPL programme.

On-Programme Learning

Can vary in length and content includes:

  • on and off the job training
  • formative learning against apprenticeship standards
  • evidence mapped to the criteria within the standard
  • testing mapped to the criteria
  • uploading certificates
  • periodic reviews with employer input
  • mentoring throughout the process
  • calculation of the 20% off-the-job requirement
  • reflective account
  • summative portfolio ready for the Gateway and more
Gateway

Includes access rights for the Employer, Training Provider and EPAO to assess and validate the learner’s readiness for the EPA. Typically the Gateway allows the upload of the learner’s summative e-portfolio, the required English and Maths certificates, the training provider and employer’s declarations of compliance with the standard’s requirements and more. The gateway requirements have to be satisfied in order for the learner to move further, to the End-Point assessment step.

End-Point Assessment

Can vary in duration and content depending on the industry, level etc. and is detailed in the Assessment Plan for each of the Apprenticeship Standards. SkilSure’s EPA tool was built with that in mind and is flexible to adapt and match all the requirements of the Assessment Plan. Typical components of EPA are: knowledge testing, business projects, practical observations, a competency based interview, professional discussion etc. Some of these steps may require the use of assessment and/or grading forms specific to the industry and employer and SkilSure has the capability to do the necessary customisation.
