What is a Learning Management System?

Here at The Learning Network, we combine methodologies that use what are called Learning Management Systems (LMS). A learning management system is — at its core — a software application or web-based technology that is used to plan, implement, and assess a specific learning process. LMS applications are used primarily in eLearning settings and consist of two elements:

  1. A server that contains the base functionality
  2. A user interface utilized by students and instructors

LMS applications are used to deliver instructional content either through a web-based portal or a computer application. In some cases, they can even be used on a smartphone. They also provide students or employees with the ability to interact in a way they wouldn’t be able to in in-person settings.

For example, students or employees may be able to interact with each other using threaded discussions, video conferencing, or discussion forums. LMS applications are used in a wide variety of industries, from manufacturing to healthcare and more.

Even better, with technologies becoming more user-friendly than ever, learning management systems are easier to create than ever before. No matter what company you work at or what industry you operate in, just about every department or back-office in your operation could benefit from employing learning management software.

The fact is LMS applications and interfaces are used by businesses of all sizes. They are also used by government agencies and traditional academic institutions. Traditional institutions have embraced LMS as a way to improve on traditional education methods while saving organizations time and money. There are just far too many benefits to utilizing these systems. And for those who are intimidated by LMS utilization, consider the benefits of organizations that offer training on how eLearning and LMS usage can benefit your organization.

Learning Management Systems allow administrators and instructors to effectively manage elements such as user registration, content, calendars, user access, communication, graduation, certification, analytics, alerts, notification and so much more. The possibilities are endless.

Learning Management Systems can also be used to manage information, including internal knowledge management. Of course, the specific role of a particular Learning Management System will depend on the needs of the organization or institution. Many of these systems are quite adaptable and flexible according to user need.

At The Learning Network, Learning Management Systems make up the core of much of what we do. We understand that organizations want to have control over what, how, and when employee instruction happens, and our solutions provide that.
